Light Rigid Truck/Bus Licence

 

 

 

At the completion of this training and assessment program students will be able to obtain their Light Rigid Truck/Bus licence. Training and assessment generally takes 1 day to complete.

A Light Rigid licence allows the holder to drive a rigid vehicle with 2 axles and a GVM up to 8 tonnes - including a truck, or a bus that seats more than 12 adults including the driver. It also allows the holder to tow a trailer of no more than 9 tonnes GVM.

 

Who is this course for?

A Light Rigid (LR) licence is a legal requirement for any person who wishes to drive a rigid truck with 2 axles and a GVM up to 8 tonnes. It is also a requirement for any person wishing to drive a bus that seats more than 12 adults including the driver up to 8 tonnes GVM.

What Can I Drive With An LR Driving Licence?

An LR vehicle is defined as a motor vehicle with a gross vehicle mass of over 4.5 tonnes to a maximum of 8 tonnes (no axle limit) — or any vehicle that seats more than 12 passengers (including the driver) to a maximum of 8 tonnes.

The light rigid licence is a relatively easy licence to obtain. It covers you to drive small trucks (up to 8 tonne GVM) and mini-buses, such as Toyota Commuters, Coasters, Mitsubishi Rosas and most small motorhomes.

Note: Even though you need an LR licence if you’re driving a vehicle carrying more than 12 people (including the driver), for testing purposes you can’t use a vehicle under 4.5 tonne GVM, such as a Toyota Commuter.

 

How to get your truck licence?

There are 2 main ways that you can get your Truck Licence in either state.

The first way is much the same as your car licence, where you register with the department of transport or RTA for a test. Normally the waiting list for this is 4-6 weeks, plus you still need to hire a truck that you can do your test in.

The second, and much easier way, is to go through a licensed training organisation. Here at The School Of Transport, we are licensed under the NSW Heavy Vehicle Competency Based Assessment (HVCBA) to carry out your training and assessment, as well as being accredited by Queensland Transport to carry out your training and we will arrange your driving test with Queensland Transport .
