At the completion of this training and assessment program students will be able to obtain their Medium Rigid vehicle licence. MR Licence Training and assessment generally takes 1 day (approximately 10 hours) to complete depending on student competency.
Ellis Driving School Medium Rigid licence allows the holder to drive a rigid vehicle with 2 axles and a GVM of 8 tonnes or more - including a truck or a bus. It also allows the holder to tow a trailer of no more than 9 tonnes GVM, and any vehicle covered by a Class LR Licence.

You must have held a Class C licence (not a learner) for at least one year.
How to get an MR Licence
- Pass the Driver Knowledge Test (you can do this before or after your on road practical service with Ellis Driving School)
- Complete an application form,
- Show evidence of your identity (this may be your driver’s licence),
- Pass an eyesight test,
- Produce the Certificate of Competency (Issued by Ellis Driving School) to show that you’ve passed the driving test or the training program,
- Pay the new licence fee.
Once these procedures are done and you pay the fee for the new MR Licence, you are ready to drive down your MR vehicle on the Sydney roads. Our instructors at Ellis driving school are extremely competent in giving you a detailed instruction and training in driving an MR vehicle.
COVID-19
In relation to the coronavirus we have implemented measures to protect both our students and staff in these trying times. We are closely following the advice from the Australia Department of Health, and adopting the strictest personal hygiene measures in our cars, trucks, and places of work.
We have limited non-training staff, by having our administration staff work from home. Course sizes have also been limited to ensure that our training spaces have a minimum of 4 square meters per person.
All our students are being advised that they must reschedule if they::
· Have returned from overseas within the last 14 days
· Been in contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case in the last 14 days
· Been advised to self-isolate in the last 14 days
· Experiencing symptoms like: cough, fever, runny nose, shortness of breath, or any other respiratory illness.

About The Licence
A Medium Rigid vehicle includes trucks and busses with a GVM more than 8 tonnes and 2 axles. Holders of a MR licence may also tow a trailer with a weight not exceeding nine (9) tonnes GVM. Ellis Driving School also provides training to any drivers who are wanting to obtain their licence and become a qualified driver for any public buses or coaches and/or any public relevant public passenger vehicle. There is no practical component to the course.
Course Requirement:
Must be at least 20 years of age, and have held an Australian driver’s licence for a total of at least twelve 12 months in the two 2 years preceding the date of the application.
– Completed and passed the examination or assessment & be able to work in Australia.
The NSW Department of Transport & Infrastructure will request any criminal history from Australian Police services and a driving history from the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority.
Participants are required to undergo a medical check, provide photographs, and a licence fee of $70 is payable directly to the NSW Department of Transport & Infrastructure.
