If you want to work as a semi-trailer driver, you must first obtain an HC licence. This licence category includes vehicles such as prime movers, pig trailers, floats, low loaders and trucks and dogs. The HC licence is required for a variety of jobs such as tanker driver, road construction/quarry driver, refrigerated transport, container transport, heavy general freight, bulk garden supplies and more. According to the RMS, an HC licence is required to operate the following:  

•    Articulated vehicles with three or more axles

•    Heavy rigid vehicle trailer combinations including unladen dolly, with three or more axles

•    Any towed trailer with a GVM greater than nine tonnes
