Heavy Rigid (HR) Class Licence allows you to drive:

•     Any rigid vehicle with three or more axles and a GVM of more than 8 tonnes.

•     Any towed trailer must not weigh more than 9 tonnes GVM.

•     Also includes articulated buses and vehicles in Class MR.

To get a heavy vehicle licence you need to: hold a current Victorian car licence. hold or have held an Australian car licence for the minimum time or a lower heavy vehicle category for the required minimum time. pass an eyesight test. pass a heavy vehicle knowledge test.

How to get a HR Licence

·         Pass the Driver Knowledge Test (you can do this before or after your on road practical service     with  Ellis Driving School)

·         Complete an application form,

·         Show evidence of your identity (this may be your driver’s licence),

·         Pass an eyesight test,

·         Produce the Certificate of Competency (Issued by Ellis Driving School) to show that you’ve passed the driving test or the training program,

·         Pay for new licence fee.

However, the HR Condition B is an excellent entry-level truck licence for those looking for work in the road transportation industry. Because many modern trucks and heavy vehicles no longer use crash gearboxes, it's a relatively inexpensive licence to obtain with plenty of job opportunities. If you want to drive trucks, buses, or coaches for a living and do not want or need to use a road ranger gearbox, this is the option for you. If necessary, you can easily upgrade from this licence at a later date. If you're looking for work in the mines, an HR driving licence might be a requirement, if you drive dump trucks (all automatic gearboxes), an HR Condition A or B Licence will cover you.
